Law Day is October 8

Hello!

Thursday, October 8, is LAW DAY at IUB: http://www.hpplc.indiana.edu/law/law-lawday.shtml. With over 110 schools coming, it will be the largest Law Fair in the country. We offer a rare opportunity that most other college students simply do not have. Get an edge on your competition. Questions? Contact HPPLC at hpplc@indiana.edu. [For a list of schools that have registered so far, see http://www.hpplc.indiana.edu/law/LawDay2007.shtml%5D

All 3 events below are great for all IU students, including freshmen and sophomores. But if you are a current applicant or a junior, you should consider attendance at events mandatory!

Please at least drop by and register. Our turnout is always first in the Big Ten, typically triple that of #2. Help us stay #1!! Casual attire is fine. More formal attire is also fine.

1. Panel Discussion, Q & A, 9:00 – 10:45 AM (quiet latecomers welcome) in the Frangipani Room – IMU. Three Law School Deans will reveal the inner secrets of the admissions process: “WHAT I REALLY LIKE TO SEE IN A LAW SCHOOL APPLICATION!” These experts will provide invaluable insider information!

2. Law School Fair, 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM in Alumni Hall – IMU.
Representatives from 110 (so far) law schools will be here to recruit YOU! Ask questions about their programs, admission requirements, and your specific strengths (and weaknesses). Pick up material, information, and application FEE WAIVERS. Making a good impression can be helpful in the admissions process. Don’t know what to ask? Consider these Questions to Ask Law Schools. Not ready to ask yet? No problem—you can learn quite a bit by eavesdropping.

3. For the first time at IU, we will host a Mock Admissions Committee Meeting, 3:15 to 5:00 PM in the Dogwood Room – IMU. Three actual admission officials from 3 different law schools will openly discuss files of actual applicants! Discover under what conditions factors BEYOND the numbers help (or not): e.g., lower LSAT but impressive internships; above average numbers but no activities, low GPA due only to bad freshman year, etc., etc.). It will reveal solid information that will help you maximize your strengths and finesse your weakness to put together the most powerful application package possible.

Want more info? Please do not reply to this email, but contact the Health Professions and Prelaw Center by emailing hpplc@indiana.edu.

We hope to see you there!
Mac Francis

Managing The Stress Of Being A Prehealth Student

Managing The Stress Of Being A Prehealth Student

Wednesday, October 14, 2015
6:00 PM – 7:00 PM at Ballantine 330

If you feel stressed out about the process of being admitted to health professions programs, you are not alone! Preprofessionals often worry about being competitive for admission, and often unfairly compare themselves to the progress they think their peers perusing similar goals are making.

In this session, co-presented by the Health Professions and Prelaw Center and IU Counseling and Psychological Services, we present concrete stress-reducing self-care techniques:
–constructive ways to respond to the pressures of being a very busy preprofessional student, who must also be academically successful beyond what many of your peers must achieve
–specific ways to manage the sense of competition you might feel in relation to peers applying to the same professional programs as yourself
–specific ways to cope with the stress that often comes with changing (or even thinking about changing) your career path – changes which are sometimes unexpected or unwanted (e.g., when students think they may not be competitive for admission, or find themselves unanchored when they feel they’ve been on the “wrong” path)

There will be plenty of time to discuss your own questions, concerns, and ideas.

Reducing your level of preprofessional stress can lead to making better personal, academic, and career decisions, and can also help you more fully enjoy your undergraduate experience. Come join us. HPPLC and CAPS invite all students and alumni pursuing admission to any type of competitive admission health program to attend Managing The Stress Of Being A Prehealth Student, now in its fourth year.

It is okay if you need to arrive late or leave early.

2016 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship Program

I write to encourage you to apply for the prestigious 2016 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation awards. Nominees must be current sophomores or juniors who have outstanding potential and who intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering. All nominees must be U.S. citizens, resident aliens, or U.S. nationals.

Students who are selected as Goldwater Scholars receive $7,500 per year that can be applied to the costs of tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Sophomore scholarship recipients are eligible for two years of scholarship support; juniors recipients are eligible for one year of scholarship support.

The College of Arts and Sciences conducts an internal competition and can nominate up to four students to the national selection committee for consideration. The application process is somewhat complex with some materials being submitted to the Goldwater organization on-line and other materials submitted in hard copy, with different deadlines for each. Students who are interested in being nominated should arrange a meeting as soon as possible with Ms. Rebekka Potter in the Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office, Owen Hall 104 (855-1647) who will help explain and facilitate the process, which includes registering with the College and then completing an on-line application. Students will ask three faculty recommenders to submit letters of support electronically to the College. If a student is selected for nomination to the national competition, faculty will then be asked to upload their letters to the Goldwater organization site. Nominees successful in the internal competition and their letter writers will have the benefit of feedback from the College’s selection committee before making their on-line application to the Goldwater organization.

The deadline for submission of all materials for the internal competition is:
5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 6, 2015
All paper-based materials are to be submitted to
Ms. Rebekka Potter (Undergraduate Academic Affairs Office)
Owen Hall 104

In the past, successful nominees have had a minimum 3.900 overall College GPA. The College’s internal selection committee will meet in early December to deliberate and select the nominees to be forwarded to the national competition. Please note that the Goldwater organization does not accept direct student applications for this award. For more detailed information you can go to: http://www.act.org/goldwater.

Additionally, it is important to note that the Goldwater Scholarship is for research-oriented students and is not awarded to pre-med students. Accordingly, applicants must be actively engaged in a research project and their research statements need to be both fully and carefully developed and comprehensible to a broad, well-educated, and scientifically-focused audience. It is the experience of past selection committees that research statements that have been polished in consultation with the faculty research supervisor before submission tend to have a higher rate of acceptance/selection as finalists.

Only four additional LSTU courses are required instead of five, to complete this minor.

8W2 course on organization, studying, deep learning – Becoming the Best Student!

We still have open seats in X150! If you know a Freshman or Sophomore looking for a 2nd 8 Weeks course, and who could use a booster in college academics to finish out the semester strong, please consider guiding them to the SAC’s EDUC-X150:

EDUC-X150: Reading-Learning Techniques 1 (2 credits)
VT: Becoming the Best Student
http://sac.indiana.edu/courses/x150beststudent/

“I learned exactly what I thought I was going to learn when I chose to do this course, which is to be a better student. I learned my strengths and I learned my weaknesses, which guide me to notice what I need to improve in order to not just be a better student, but a better person as well.”

X150 is a concentrated crash-course in how to become the best possible college student you can be. It is designed to help you organize your life as a student, develop best practices for academic study, and, ultimately, to foster a love of deep learning. Coursework builds transferable skills in time management, studying and test-taking, taking notes, reading for better comprehension, and critical thinking that you can use in any class and in the world beyond.

General Motors recruiting

GM will be back on campus for fall interviews the week of 10/5, with an Information Session the night of the 5th, and interviews on the 6th and 7th. We are hiring for 6 entry-level positions. Our goal is to hire another 600 college students this year.

We have created a job posting on the ASCS Career Link site (http://ascs.indiana.edu/, ID 14034). While we have the 6 different entry level positions, we posted a single “Entry Level Developer – IT” position on campus for simplicity. Most of the Mathematics/Statistics/Physics majors we’ve hired from IU are typically interested in either the Business Intelligence & Data Analytics Developer role, or the Software Developer role. However, we do have some who are doing very well in other roles, like IT Operations Engineer doing Unix/Linux System Administration.

General Motors IT Innovation
Information Session
October 5th, 7-9pm
Kelley School of Business

food will be provided

Ask Liz or Kevin Pilgrim for the attachments describing each of the six different entry level positions.
