Preparation for Industrial Careers in the Mathematical Sciences (PICMath)

PICMath, short for “Preparation for Industrial Careers in the Mathematical Sciences,” is an NSF-funded project to prepare math science students for industrial careers by engaging them in research problems that come directly from industry. A series of case study videos has been released, each in two parts to cover both the career and the technical background needed. Research problems featured include:

Improving Marketing Strategies

Creating More Realistic Animation for Movies

Building a Better Filter

Finding the Safest Place to Store Nuclear Waste

See the *Industrial Math Case Studies* videos at

http://www.maa.org/programs/faculty-and-departments/pic-math/solving-real-world-problems

The strong focus of this project is increasing awareness about career options.

Best regards on behalf of SIAM, MAA, NSF,and the directors of PICMath,

Suzanne Weekes

Co-Director, PICMath Program

Associate Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences
Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Support for this Mathematical Association of America (MAA) and Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) program is provided by the National Science Foundation (NSF grant DMS-1345499).

seats available in IUB’s one-on-one academic coaching class: EDUC X156

The Student Academic Center has created a new curriculum for our one-on-one coaching class, EDUC X156: College and Life-Long Learning. The two credit course meets for one hour weekly as a class and then partners each enrolled student with a specially trained undergraduate peer coach to complete the second hour of the class. Coaches help students:
• set manageable weekly goals
• identify bottlenecks to success
• determine forthcoming time management issues
• discover personal power and responsibility
• and learn some of the best academic habits and study skills

Along the way, the coach often serves as an accountability partner, a first step to discovering campus resources, or a confidant. We have space in the courses presently. Different sections meet:
M 4-4:505p 31248
T 5-5:50p 3633
W 4-4:50p 33920

Math-M 295: Math Contest in Modeling (1 credit)

Permission is required in order to enroll; send email Kevin Pilgrim, http://www.math.indiana.edu/people/profile.phtml?id=pilgrim, if you haven’t already done so.

Work on a team with one or two other students developing mathematical models. Examples: “Find the plane lost at sea.” and “Where should we put an Ebola clinic?” Guided by a graduate student in mathematics, you’ll work on two such problems over a period of 10 weeks developing a lengthy, detailed report. You’ll get training not only in developing technical models, but also in writing to diverse audiences–key skills valued by employers. Participation in the February 2016 Math Contest in Modeling is encouraged but not required.

Math-Y 201 Service Learning in Math (1 credit)

No permission required.

The purpose of this one-credit course is to provide experiential learning opportunities to our undergraduate majors. This purpose will be accomplished by involving students in this class with the Mathematics Department Outreach Program: Bloomington Math Circle. The Circle program meets for 90 minutes on Saturday afternoons. It is expected that the undergraduate students enrolled in this course will attend all Circle programs and spend an additional 90 minutes a week outside of the program learning LaTeX and writing up the activities and extensions.
Students will work out solutions; create sample guiding questions for helping children when they are stuck; create generalizations, extensions, and connections of the outreach activities.

This looks great on a resume!!

Math-S 499 Mathematics GRE Subject Test preparation

Permission is required in order to enroll; send email to Professor Pilgrim, http://www.math.indiana.edu/people/profile.phtml?id=pilgrim .

Thinking about graduate school in math? You’ll likely need to take the Math GRE subject test.

Guided by an experienced graduate student, you will work through practice GRE Mathematics Subject tests, focusing on those areas on which you need work. The test is about half calculus, a quarter linear algebra, and a quarter a variety of other topics, including probability, group theory, complex analysis, etc.

———————

Math-M 491 Putnam seminar

No permission required, but students are encouraged to contact the instructor, Professor Bercovici, if they have not enrolled previously, or if they have not discussed this option with a faculty member or advisor.

Love puzzles and contests? Train for the Putnam Competition, the first Saturday in December. This class gives deep training for challenging math problems.
