2013-2014 Intensive Writing Essay Prize Competition

2013-2014 Intensive Writing Essay Prize Competition

Dear Summer and Fall 2013 Intensive Writing participants,

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Campus Writing Program are currently soliciting submissions for the annual Intensive Writing (IW) Essay Prize for students enrolled in IW courses during the 2013-2014 academic year. A committee of past and current IW instructors will select two winning essays (one essay longer than 10 pages and one essay shorter than 10 pages) from each of the three breadth of inquiry areas in which IW courses are taught: Arts and Humanities, Social and Historical Studies, and Natural and Mathematical Sciences. The primary criterion of evaluation will be excellence in argument and exposition.

These prizes, valued at $150, are awarded each academic year, and nominations and submissions are accepted in the fall and spring semesters. The deadline for essays to be considered for the Intensive Writing Essay Prize for the 2013-2014 academic year is Friday, March 7, 2014. Please see the Campus Writing Program webpage or the College Intensive Writing Essay Prize webpage for specific information on submission procedures for this competition.

We encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to have your best writing recognized by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Campus Writing Program and to help us highlight not only the valuable role that writing plays in the College curriculum, but the excellence of our Intensive Writing program. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

Terri A. Greenslade, Assistant Dean, College of Arts and Sciences

Harvard Biostatistics graduate programs

We are writing to identify undergraduate and post-baccalaureate minority students (particularly African-American, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native students) with excellent aptitude in mathematics and statistics.  The Department of Biostatistics, which administers PhD training at the Harvard School of Public Health, seeks outstanding minority applicants for its graduate programs in Biostatistics.

We would like to increase our success in attracting qualified minority students, particularly African Americans.  Students best suited for careers in Biostatistics are those with strong mathematical abilities, combined with interests in health and biology.  Biostatistics is an excellent career choice for students interested in mathematics applied to real world problems.  Statisticians have their pick of jobs-Google, Facebook, pharmaceutical companies and tenure-track academic positions straight out of graduate school.  “We’re just not finding unemployed statisticians,” says Ronald Wasserstein, PhD, executive director of the American Statistical Association.  We could not agree more.

As the role of biostatisticians is becoming more important, the Department of Biostatistics recently expanded its already strong Ph.D. program by adding a Master of Science in Computational Biology degree, offered jointly with the Department of Epidemiology. This will provide students with the rigorous quantitative training and essential skills needed to successfully meet the challenges presented by large-scale public health data-“Big Data” – a new phase in biomedical research.  It is intended as a terminal professional degree which will enable you to launch your career in bioinformatics.  It can also provide the foundation for further doctoral studies in biostatistics, epidemiology, computational biology, and other related fields.

All doctoral students accepted in our department are guaranteed full tuition and stipend support throughout their program, as long as they are making satisfactory progress towards the PhD degree.  Every effort is made to meet the individual needs of each student, and to insure the successful completion of graduate work.

Please note the deadline for submitting applications to the MA and PhD programs for entry in the fall of 2014 is December 15, 2013.  Our prospective student web page link is here:

New Career Development Center and Arts and Sciences Career Services Websites

Website Launch
New websites for the Career Development Center and Arts & Sciences Career Services have officially launched!
cdc.indiana.edu
In our office’s constant effort to innovate how we reach the student population, we are excited to share the launch of our new websites. Although in the past we have combined online resources for the Career Development Center and the Arts and Sciences Career Services, we have decided to separate these two student populations to expand resources for targeted audiences.
The Career Development Center website highlights resources and services for new students, exploratory or undeclared majors, and students thinking of changing their current major. Visit the new website at: http://www.cdc.indiana.edu.
The Arts and Sciences Career Services website is geared directly towards students in The College of Arts and Sciences, providing them with resources and services for developing liberal arts careers. Visit the new website at: http://www.ascs.indiana.edu.
Social media sites – such as Twitter (@IUCareers), Facebook (Indiana University-Career Development Center), LinkedIn (Indiana University Career Development Center), and Pinterest (@IUCareers) will continue to serve both the Career Development Center and Arts and Sciences Career Services.
In order to make this transition as smooth as possible, our office is happy to answer any questions you may have regarding these changes. Feel free to contact our office.
We appreciate your support through this process,
The Career Development Center and Arts & Sciences Career Services
