Math Club Meeting Tonight (September 27th)

Hello Math Club,

Tonight we will meet at 6:30 PM in Rawles 104 for a talk by Professor Larry Moss on “Majority Rules”
There will once again be free pizza and some cool math.

I hope to see you there!

Best,
Jordan Lenchitz

Abstract: Medieval education presented logic as one of the three components of the ‘trivium’, along with grammar and rhetoric. The topics in logic studied would have included syllogisms. In modern terminology, people would have seen logical facts such as

All X are Y
All Y are Z
_________
All X are Z

We would say that for any sets X, Y, and Z, if X is a subset of Y, and Y a subset of Z, then X is a subset of Z.

For the most part, the logical tradition has dispensed with syllogisms in favor of reasoning with quantifiers like “for all” and “there exists”. However, I have a research program of re-examining versions of the syllogism but with much more ‘stuff’ around. This talk takes up ‘most’, with the meaning of ‘a strict majority of’. For example, two of the following are valid rules, and one is not. Can you tell which?

Most X are Y
Most X are Z
——————-
Some Y are Z

All Z are Y
Most X are Z
——————
Most X are Y

All X are Y
Most X are Z
——————
Most Z are Y

What are all the valid ‘majority’ rules?

This topic does not even come up in the usual treatments of logic, since ‘most’ goes beyond the usual system of logic, first-order logic.

In this talk, I’ll discuss some very new results about ‘majority rules’, the logic of ‘most’ together with other quantifiers. Most of the work was done right here at IU. This included contributions by a former math (combinatorics) grad student, Tri Lai, and a visiting professor, Joerg Endrullis. Further, I’ll show off a computer program that handles a few of the interesting inferences involving ‘most’.

The talk doesn’t assume any knowledge of logic.

volunteer tutors needed at Templeton Elementary

Dear Math Majors,

We have been asked if we could provide some community support for math tutoring at Templeton Elementary School. The Monroe County Public Library provides tutoring, but some parents of struggling learners at Templeton lack the transportation required to transport their students to the library and get them back home.

Email me If you are willing to volunteer to tutor at Templeton (which is about a mile from the Rawles Hall).

Thanks,
Prof. Jee Koh
Director of Undergraduate Studies
