Taught by: Dr. Jennifer Goodlander

COLL Intensive Writing section

COLL (CASE) Global Civ & Culture credit

COLL (CASE) A&H Breadth of Inquiry credit

Beautiful masks and ritual puppets… Dancing and chanting… Ornate costumes and exotic make up…

The theatres of Asia are vast and varied in their styles and contexts.  Did you know a puppeteer can make holy water in Bali?  Or that butoh dancers in Japan explore emotion and memory through their slow movements?  Or some actors in India put chili peppers in their eyes to make the whites turn red for performance?

This course will introduce many of the forms of theatre performed throughout Asia today.  In doing so we will examine the aesthetics, beliefs, politics, and cultural context associated with these performance forms in order to trouble the dichotomy between traditional/contemporary and therefore expand our knowledge of Asia and its performance practices.  In this course we will:

  • Increase knowledge of major figures and examples of Asian performance.
  • Develop skills and vocabulary for understanding Asian performance.
  • Foster an awareness of theatre as a social institution, which reflects cultural, economic, political, and spiritual trends of the day.
  • Continue to question and re-define the nature and purpose of theatre.

No experience in theatre or Asia is required!

2014 Actuarial Career Day at Columbia University

I am sending the note below on behalf of the Actuarial Society of Greater New York…

We cordially invite you to attend the 25th annual Actuarial Career Day. This event will take place on Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Columbia University’s Alfred Lerner Hall, 2920 Broadway, New York, NY 10027.

College freshmen through graduate students are welcome as well as professionals interested in the actuarial field as a future career.  We encourage mathematics, economics, computer, finance, business and of course — actuarial science — students, as well as their professors and career counselors to attend.

Our program is designed to provide first-hand industry information so that an actuarial career may be intelligently compared with careers in other fields.  We will cover all facets of the profession, including permanent and internship employment opportunities. Major insurance organizations and consulting firms will be represented.  Attendees will have the opportunity to speak with practicing actuaries, obtain literature and submit resumes. There will be ample time for informal discussion and individual questions. Complimentary refreshments/lunch will be served.

There is NO registration fee if you register on or before December 15, 2013. A late fee will apply after December 15th. Attached is an outline of the Actuarial Career Day program and a registration form. Attendees MUST return the registration form along with their resumes either electronically (preferably) to actuarycareerday@aol.com or via fax to 516-931-7842. We will confirm attendees by January 8, 2014.  If you don’t receive your confirmation by January 8th, or if you have any questions, feel free to call us at 516-935-0100 (ask for Terri or Pauline) or email us at actuarycareerday@aol.com.

Thank you in advance for helping us make Actuarial Career Day a success.
