Harvard Biostatistics graduate programs

We are writing to identify undergraduate and post-baccalaureate minority students (particularly African-American, Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaska Native students) with excellent aptitude in mathematics and statistics.  The Department of Biostatistics, which administers PhD training at the Harvard School of Public Health, seeks outstanding minority applicants for its graduate programs in Biostatistics.

We would like to increase our success in attracting qualified minority students, particularly African Americans.  Students best suited for careers in Biostatistics are those with strong mathematical abilities, combined with interests in health and biology.  Biostatistics is an excellent career choice for students interested in mathematics applied to real world problems.  Statisticians have their pick of jobs-Google, Facebook, pharmaceutical companies and tenure-track academic positions straight out of graduate school.  “We’re just not finding unemployed statisticians,” says Ronald Wasserstein, PhD, executive director of the American Statistical Association.  We could not agree more.

As the role of biostatisticians is becoming more important, the Department of Biostatistics recently expanded its already strong Ph.D. program by adding a Master of Science in Computational Biology degree, offered jointly with the Department of Epidemiology. This will provide students with the rigorous quantitative training and essential skills needed to successfully meet the challenges presented by large-scale public health data-“Big Data” – a new phase in biomedical research.  It is intended as a terminal professional degree which will enable you to launch your career in bioinformatics.  It can also provide the foundation for further doctoral studies in biostatistics, epidemiology, computational biology, and other related fields.

All doctoral students accepted in our department are guaranteed full tuition and stipend support throughout their program, as long as they are making satisfactory progress towards the PhD degree.  Every effort is made to meet the individual needs of each student, and to insure the successful completion of graduate work.

Please note the deadline for submitting applications to the MA and PhD programs for entry in the fall of 2014 is December 15, 2013.  Our prospective student web page link is here:
