Actuarial Club Callout Meeting + Other Opportunities

We are planning on having our callout meeting at 7 PM on Wednesday, September 7th in Hodge Hall. I will send another email closer to the meeting with the exact room. We will be covering what roles actuaries can work in, the exam process, and preview the SOA Case Study that the club participates in during the spring. If you went to either of last year’s callout meetings, this meeting’s material may be a bit redundant.

Lastly, I have been sent two great opportunities that I wanted to share with you all. The flier for OneAmerica’s event in Indianapolis is attached [ask Liz]. Make sure to read the bottom of that flier for RSVP details.

An alum working at CNA in Chicago also reached out with the following:

We have a number of intern opportunities at my company CNA (Chicago HQ) that I think would be of interest. Here are some inside details I can give:

– 11 Open Positions (10 in P&C, 1 in LTC)

– The interns have a lot of fun. A lot of happy hours, luxury accommodation, and generally brown bag events for you to develop and network professionally

– Good culture here. Generally not stressful (this is industry, not consulting) and Chicago HQ is good proximate location from IU

– We are extremely technologically advanced for an insurer. I think it’s because of our P&C division, as they are in the forefront of machine learning, cloud-based tools, and other initiatives that trickle down the rest of the company. For example, my division is rapidly moving towards the cloud for data storage, process automation, and distributed processing. This is the main reason I like the company, and the intern program is meant for full-hire conversions, so hopefully that piques your interest.

Looking forward to seeing you all next week!

Best,

Eric Herbst

2022 SOA Research Institute Student Research Case Study Challenge

As part of its mission, the SOA Research Institute recognizes the importance of partnering with colleges and universities to help develop future actuaries. Please read the full details of the case study and listen to a podcast which provides valuable information and guidance to students on this page.

Please note, intention forms  are due by Sunday, March 6, 2022 and final submissions are due by 8:00PM U.S. Central Standard Daylight Time on Friday, March 25, 2022. Any questions or clarifications on these rules should be directed to the SOA Research Institute via email to research@soa.org.

Actuarial Club – Spring Semester

I hope everyone is doing well and you all enjoyed the long weekend.

For potential new members, my name is Eric Herbst and I am serving as president of the club this semester. We will have our callout meeting on January 25th at 7:30 PM (TBD if it will be in-person) where we will cover what actuaries do, where they work, and what it takes to become an actuary. We will have pizza! Also, please join this GroupMe for more last-minute information.

For existing members, this initial meeting will be the same as the first meeting that we had over the fall semester, so you do not need to attend unless you want the review/pizza.

On another note, the Society of Actuaries is putting on their annual case study challenge beginning on January 21st. We won the competition last year and want to follow up with a strong submission. It’s a great introduction to the actuarial field and great to talk about in interviews. You only need to put as much effort in as you’re willing, and you don’t need any prior technical knowledge. Please contact me if you have any interest or questions!

For the rest of the semester, we are planning on having two alumni speakers, a meeting dedicated to studying/working through problems, and a couple of other meetings where the topic is TBD. The beginning of the semester will be light on meetings since we have the case study challenge, but please let me know if there’s anything you’d like to see! I am looking forward to the semester!

Best, Eric

SOA Student Case Study Challenge

The SOA will release the 2022 Student Research Case Study Challenge on Friday, January 21. University students of all ages are invited to participate in teams of 2-5 students from the same university. This is a great opportunity for students to work in teams to solve complex, real-world-like business problems. Participating students from previous years report that this has given them an advantage in the interviewing process and applying for grad school.

Listen to the podcast of the 2021 challenge winners to hear about the students’ experience, see the 2021 winning submissions, and learn more here: https://www.soa.org/research/opportunities/2021-student-case-study/ NOTE: The First place winners in this podcast are from IUB!

For more information, follow the link to the SOA 2022 student research case study web page: https://www.soa.org/research/opportunities/2022-student-research-case-study-challenge/

Actuary Club: Postponing Tomorrow’s Data Challenge Meeting

Actuarial Club,

I’ve had a handful of members tell me that they won’t be able to make it to tomorrow’s meeting, and I am not going to have time to get the food, so we are going to postpone the meeting until next week on November 10th at 7 PM in Hodge Hall. Sorry for the late notice, but I am looking forward to it! We are still planning to do Potbelly’s for food.

Please join this GroupMe if you have not already, and remember to let me know if you would like to attend the November 15th virtual professional event hosted by the Actuarial Club of Indianapolis.

Best,

Eric
