Math Club for September 28th

Hi all,

This week’s speaker is a guest from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, speaking with a talk titled Counting Bracket Tournaments and Output Arrays. As usual, we’ll be meeting at 6:15 PM this Wednesday, September 28th (talk starting at 6:30),but because our speaker wishes to use a projector, we’ll be meeting in Rawles 104 rather than the lounge (it’s directly opposite the lounge). I hope to see you all there!

Abstract:

We start by discussing bracket tournaments and discover a new integer sequence. We prove some things about this sequence by using an output array. We then observe that the techniques are very general, and we use them to establish some new elementary but appealing results. The only prerequisites are knowing Pascal’s formula and what a recurrence relation is. Being a college basketball fan is useful but not necessary.
