Bloomington Celebrates Ada Lovelace Day on October 12

Ada Lovelace Day is an international celebration of the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

According to Ada Lovelace Day International, “[the day] aims to increase the profile of women in STEM and, in doing so, create new role models who will encourage more girls into STEM careers and support women already working in STEM.”

Founded in 2009, it is now held every year on the second Tuesday of October. This year, Ada Lovelace Day is moving online, with cities across the world participating in new and exciting ways. Ada Lovelace Day International is featuring a variety of free webinars centered around some of science’s biggest questions.

This year, Bloomington is hosting its third annual Ada Lovelace Day Celebration, with a lunchtime discussion panel and celebration of the world’s first computer programmer. Our panel will focus on how the arts related to STEM (commonly referred to as “STEAM”) and highlight Cardinal’s upcoming production of Ada and the Engine. Lunch is provided! Panelist information coming shortly.

Free and open to the public! RSVP here.

Ada Lovelace Day is a part of The Mill’s Innovation Week. Learn more about it and see the full schedule of events here.

In the weeks leading up to the celebration, Cardinal will be featuring various Women in STEAM and sharing trivia about Ada Lovelace via social media. Follow them on Facebook or Instagram to join the fun.

“Resilience isn’t just a muscle flexing strength, it’s also the strength to create joy under tough circumstances.” ~ George Takei

Resilience is the capacity of a system—be it natural, social, cultural, economic, or technological— to return to its original state or evolve to a new functional state after being disturbed. Resilient systems are diverse and adaptable, connected yet modular, sustainable and regenerative, accessible and equitable. And, they are needed now more than ever.
