Coffee and Conversation with Teach for America

We are a national nonprofit organization devoted to eradicating educational inequity. We believe that education is the single most important civil rights issue of our time, because education lies at the heart of every other civil rights issue imaginable.  To create a just education system for all children, we understand that it’s necessary to enact systemic changes – inside and outside the walls of our nation’s classrooms – that would allow for schools, teachers, kids, and families to thrive.  It takes a coalition of diverse folx working in every career field, including education, law, policy, mental and physical healthcare, STEM, and anything else you can think of, in order to generate the strong academic and personal results we want for all of the kids we serve.

Indianapolis STEM Teacher Residency Program – Purdue University

It is no secret that Indiana continues to experience a shortage of high qualified K-12 STEM teachers, and this shortage is especially acute in our highest needs schools. In response to the demand to place highly qualified teachers in Indiana’s K-12 classrooms, Purdue University’s College of Education , Center for Advancing the Teaching and Learning of STEM (CATALYST), and Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) are pleased to introduce the Indianapolis STEM Teacher Residency (ISTR) program.

The ISTR program aims to strengthen the educational outcomes of students in one of the largest urban school districts in Indiana by preparing culturally competent, highly qualified teachers who will elevate student achievement in middle and high school STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). ISTR participants will develop enhanced knowledge, skills, and dispositions for integrating engineering and technology design into science, mathematics, and/or computer science instruction through project-based, inquiry-oriented approaches.

We are now taking applications for this 100% online program, which is intended for individuals without extensive teaching experience who possess a strong academic and/or professional background in a STEM field and are interested in pursuing a career in secondary (Grades 5-12) science or mathematics teaching.

Participants selected for the ISTR program will be provided a stipend ($46,500 in three payments of $15,500 over 18 months), funded by the U.S. Department of Education. In return for the stipend, participants must commit to a three-year teaching position with IPS. While participating in the ISTR program, students will earn a Master of Science in Secondary STEM Education with Initial Licensure while also earning Purdue University’s signature K-12 Integrated STEM Education Graduate Certificate.

The application deadline for the Summer 2023 semester is March 15.

Interested in teaching math? Indiana has openings!

The State of Indiana has an urgent need for high school math teachers. There are 100 vacant positions, affecting roughly 14,000 students.

An incomplete list is here https://app.hirenimble.com/jobs/state/in ; search ‘math’ and filter by grade level high school, for example.

Local school districts are dealing with the shortfall in diverse ways, including hiring long-term substitutes, hiring adjuncts, and issuing emergency permits.
Each requires the support of the local district in question.  Becoming a substitute is easy: https://www.in.gov/doe/educators/educator-licensing/substitute-permits/ .

Adjunct hires are typically on short-term contracts; requirements may vary. It is also possible for IU Math graduates to obtain an “emergency credential” to teach high-school mathematics:

https://www.in.gov/doe/educators/educator-licensing/emergency-permits/ . This requires a vague “commitment” to pursuit of a regular license.

One route to licensure is through IU Math’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program. The IU Math Department offers full financial support (tuition, medical benefits, stipend) to students admitted to its MAT program. Details are here https://math.indiana.edu/graduate/mat-degree.html . Admitted students are typically offered two years of support, some usually earned in return for teaching in our classes. The teaching experience gained in our MAT program qualifies as the required experience under Indiana teaching certificate via a pathway to licensure called the Advanced Degree pathway, described here https://www.in.gov/doe/educators/educator-licensing/alternative-licensure-paths/ .

There are many other pathways to licensure, such as the IU School of Education’s Transition to Teaching (T2T) program, described here: https://education.indiana.edu/programs/transition-to-teaching/index.html ; these will eventually be more fully described on our website here https://math.indiana.edu/career-preparation/education.html ; check back next month.

Interested students may send an email to IU Math Chair Kevin Pilgrim ’89 , subject “teaching high school”.

Knowles Teaching Fellowship Information session

Get the resources you need to lead from the start as a Knowles Teaching Fellow.

The Knowles Teaching Fellowship is an intensive and cohesive, five-year program that supports early-career, high school mathematics and science teachers in their efforts to develop teaching expertise and lead from the classroom.

IU Alum John Brown will be hosting a Zoom information session for IU students for the Knowles Teaching Fellowship next week.  Any student (graduate or undergraduate) with a math or science background intending to teach high school in the US could be eligible for this fellowship. If they are planning to apply this year, that would be because they are going to start their teaching career next fall. But those with a general interest who might be candidates in future years can certainly come too to learn more.

STEM Student Opportunity

I am a Recruitment Specialist with Indianapolis Teaching Fellows (ITF), which provides a pathway into teaching for those without an education degree but who hold or are working toward a degree in a high-needs subject area.

We partner with over 45 districts and charter school networks in Indianapolis, including Indianapolis Public Schools. Our Fellows complete an intensive pre-service training before beginning to teach in Fall 2021. During their first two years of teaching, Fellows complete certification coursework and receive continuous coaching.

STEM subject areas are of a particularly high need in Indianapolis’ underserved schools. In fact, each year positions remain unfilled.

Our one pager can be found here .

Thank you!
